At the Bendigo, helping local communities is our top priority. We recognised long ago that successful communities create a successful bank, so we actively engage with local communities to help make a real difference.
Ten years ago, Bendigo launched a highly innovative program to return branch banking to communities affected by the numerous branch closures across Australia during the 1990s. A Community Bank® gives local communities the opportunity to form a company and operate a franchised Bendigo Bank branch. We provide the backroom support and revenue is shared with the locally owned company. So, as well as ensuring banking services, a Community Bank® gives communities an opportunity to enhance control over their own capital, ensuring more money is funnelled toward local investment and infrastructure. There are now more than 200 Community Bank® branches across Australia and we are advancing this model of partnership into other areas, like telecommunications.
As well as this, in 2005 we launched our charitable arm, the Community Enterprise Foundation. The Foundation collects donations in a tax-effective way to create a pool of money to help build stronger Australian communities by funding programs for families, youth, health, education, the environment, the arts and lots more. If you think your community could benefit from the Foundation’s expertise, contact your local branch manager for more details.

As a supporter of Messenger’s Local Business Awards for a number of years, Coopers Brewery enjoys a long rich history spanning over 143 years from its origins in 1862. Through the decades the brewery has seen many changes and has grown from strength to strength.
'We are now engaged in the Brewery business...' So wrote Thomas Cooper to his brother John in England, after establishing his brewing business in the new colony of South Australia back in 1862. It was a bold announcement, having turned his back on a secure job as a stonemason. South Australia was only 26 years old and times were tough in the brewing industry, but Thomas Cooper was a born entrepreneur with barrels of energy, purpose and vision.
He discovered his talent as a brewer by accident when his wife asked him to brew up a batch of ale from an old family recipe to be used as a tonic. Word quickly spread and he soon found himself brewing the now world-famous Coopers Sparkling Ale and Extra Stout for a growing number of loyal customers.
